Fiona – It can get a bit confusing, I know! I like to think of the sidebar as the actual RH (or LH) column and the “widget sidebars” as “widget containers”. Basically one’s just the physical column and the other one holds all your widgets, whether they be in the sidebar, footer or wherever.

Thanks for the clarification. Some times my brain insists on getting the two types of ‘Sidebar’ confused.

Have now filed them in my brain as ‘Sidebar’ and ‘Sidebar Areas’. Hoping my brain keeps this a bit longer so that I can design all sorts of wonderful menus and footers.

I looked through all the WP tutorials and I found that the euranna, brassblogs, and net tuts+ tutorials to be the best among them all, well in terms of accessibility, (I think it’s easier to refer back to a written tutorial than a video one that you have to seek thru and pause/load constantly) but overall, the brassblogs tutorial does a much better/broader explanation on some key parts.

My vote goes to the Brass Blogs tutorial: Creating Wordpress Themes: Themes 101.
